So there you have it ā when us Great Danes yawn, it could mean lots of different things! Maybe Iām super chill and relaxed, or perhaps Iām feeling a bit stressed out about something (like when the doorbell rings and I have no idea whoās invading our house). Hereās something pretty cool, though ā we dogs actually copy your yawns about 60% of the time! Itās like weāre so connected to you humans that we canāt help but yawn when you do. Itās our way of saying, āHey, Iām totally in sync with you!ā When you learn to read our yawn signals, you can help us feel our best. And trust me, a happy Great Dane means a happy household ā especially since we take up most of the couch anyway!
š¦“Great Dane drool: Why it happensāand how to keep your home (almost) slobber-free
How to handle Great Dane droolāand why itās not as bad as you think
Hey there, human! Yeti here from GRDane.comāyour oversized, lovable, occasionally soggy-muzzled best friend.
Letās get one thing straight: If youāre sharing your home with a Great Dane, youāre also sharing it with a little (okay, a LOT) of drool. But before you stock up on rubber gloves and mop buckets, let me show you why living with a drooly Dane isnāt just manageableāitās part of what makes us so incredibly awesome.
The #1 mistake I see new Dane families make with drool
Thinking drool is a disaster instead of a feature! My huge muzzle and floppy lips basically guarantee some serious slobber. When I get excited, or itās hot, or youāre holding a sandwichācue the drool fountains!
But hereās the secret: Most of it is perfectly normal. You donāt need to panic every time I leave a puddle. Only worry if thereās a SUDDEN change (think: way more drool, weird smell, swelling, or Iām acting sick)āthatās when you call the vet, fast.
Practical drool hacks (from a pro)
-
Drool stations: Keep soft towels near my food, water, and favorite hangout spots. Bonus points if they match your couch.
-
Absorbent mats: Place them under food and water bowlsātrust me, your kitchen floor will thank you.
-
Wipe my mouth: Itās like a mini spa session for me (seriouslyātry it!).
-
Hydration tip: Fill my water bowl halfway to avoid tidal waves. Dry my mouth right after I drink, especially before guests arrive (theyāll appreciate it).
-
Regular grooming: Brushing around my mouth keeps things fresher and is another chance for us to bond.
The tool or technique I’m loving right now
Absorbent kitchen mats! They turn post-drink slip-n-slides into no big deal. Plus, you can toss them in the washāeasy clean-up, happy human.
What to do when youāre not seeing results
Still feeling like youāre living in a Slip ‘ N ‘ Slide? Donāt stress. Drool management is about progress, not perfection. Try different towel placements, swap to higher-absorbency mats, or make drool-wiping part of your daily routine. Every Dane (and family) finds their sweet spot.
Hereās why I think āthe drool is too muchā is wrong
Drool isnāt just a messāitās communication. I drool when Iām happy, hungry, excited, or cooling down. Sometimes, itās a sign you need to check on my health. But mostly, itās just proof that youāre loved by a gentle giant with a big heart (and a slightly damp chin).

Bottom line: A little drool is a small price for a LOT of love.
Keep a towel handy, and letās enjoy the ride.
