Den’s Dispatch- Yeti Reports In #14
𦴠Danes Delight Podcast
Taking care of us Great Danes is pretty awesome if you ask me! We love our families SO much and will stick to you like glue (sometimes literally when weâre trying to be lap dogs).
Hereâs a secret about us big guys â we might look like we could eat a small car, but weâre actually total softies! Thatâs why humans call us âgentle giants.â Weâre just really, really big teddy bears who sometimes forget how huge we are.
If you learn what makes us tick and give us what we need, weâll be the happiest pups on the planet. Sure, we might knock over a few things with our tails and try to sit on your couch like weâre chihuahuas, but thatâs all part of our charm!
Trust me, having a Great Dane around makes life way more fun and full of slobbery kisses. Every day with us is an adventure â just make sure you have a really big food bowl!
𦴠Hey Dane-loving Humans!
Itâs me, Yetiâthe extra-large, extra-floppy, and extra-friendly Great Dane from GRDane.com. Iâve sniffed out this monthâs top blog posts, each packed with advice, laughs, and real-life tips for all you gentle giant owners (or soon-to-be owners). Ready to dive in? Hereâs whatâs been making tails wag lately:
Why your Great Dane sniffs everything (and how it makes your family stronger)
The surprising science: Why Great Danes sniff everything (and what it means for your family)
Hey, Great Dane familyâYeti here. Letâs talk noses. If youâve ever wondered, âWhy does my giant dog have to stop and sniff every single thing on our walk?ââthis oneâs for you.
The real reason your Dane’s nose is always working overtime
Iâm not just being nosy (okay, maybe a little). My nose is a supercomputer: Iâve got about 300 million scent detectors in this giant snoutâwhile you have just 6 million. That means I can detect everything from Mrs. Johnsonâs cat tiptoeing through the yard last night⌠to the French fry someone dropped by the mailbox, two days ago. Each sniff is like reading a story: who passed by, what they ate, if they were happy, stressed, or maybe just running late for the bus.
For us Great Danes, sniffing is more than curiosityâitâs communication. Fire hydrants are our neighborhood newsstands. Your backpack tells me where youâve been. Your mood? I can smell that tooâstress, happiness, even if you met a new dog before coming home.
Sniffing = family bonding time
If you only remember one thing, let it be this: letting your Great Dane sniff is not a waste of time. Every sniff on a walk keeps my brain sharp and my heart happy. Itâs how I unwind. Itâs also how we bond. When you slow down and let me investigate, youâre meeting me on my level (literally and emotionally!).
Letting me sniff is like handing me my favorite book or puzzle:
-
It keeps me mentally stimulated
-
It reduces stress (for both of us!)
-
It builds trustâbecause youâre showing you get what makes me tick
Next time youâre tempted to rush, picture this: a walk where you check your phone less, and I check out the world more. Thatâs together-time, Dane-style.
Make walks better for everyone: Try a âsniffariâ
Want to see your Dane truly light up? Here are three easy ways to use our sniffing superpowers for family fun:
-
Give us time: Think of walks as brain exercise, not just a bathroom break. Five minutes at one tree? Worth it.
-
Let us choose the path: Try a âsniffariââlet me lead the way (even if it means circling the same bush three times).
-
Join the adventure: Ask your kids to spot what Iâm sniffing, or guess what other animals have been there. Instant connection.
Real talk: Sniffing isnât just for funâitâs how I connect with you
When I come home and give your shoes a full inspection, Iâm not just being silly. Iâm learning about your day, your feelings, and what you care about. Sniffing is my way of saying, âI see you. Iâm here. Youâre my family.â
Nurture your bondâone sniff at a time
If you want a calm, trusting, happy Great Dane, embrace the sniff. Itâs the simplest (and maybe most powerful) way to build trust, reduce stress, and help your gentle giant feel completely at home in your family.
-
Letting your Dane sniff = a smarter, calmer, more connected dog (and human).
-
Slow down, breathe deep, and let those walks be about discovery. Iâll teach you a thing or two about living in the moment.
