How to Help Your Great Dane Make Friends (And Not Accidentally Squash the Mailman)
Hey there! If you’ve got a Great Dane (or you’re thinking about bringing one home), you already know they’re not just big—they’re giant. But here’s the truth: behind all that size is a gentle, goofy best friend who just wants to be part of the family.
But… sometimes that enthusiasm means they might try to hug the mailman, or accidentally flatten a neighbor with a loving nudge. So, let’s talk about socialization—the single most important thing you can do to help your Dane become the friendly, safe, confident companion you want.
Why Socialization Matters
Great Danes are born gentle giants, but their size means good manners are non-negotiable. Early, positive socialization helps your Dane:
- Stay calm around new people and pets
- Avoid being fearful or reactive
- Learn that the world (including the mailman!) isn’t scary
Skip socialization, and you risk a stressed-out, jumpy, or pushy giant—not exactly the family dog dream.
My Step-by-Step Guide to Making Friends
- Start young—but it’s never too late!
- Puppies are sponges, but older Danes can learn too. Just go slower.
- Take it one new thing at a time.
- Introduce your Dane to different people: kids, adults, people in hats, folks with wheelchairs—each new encounter builds confidence.
- Meet other dogs of all shapes and sizes (supervised, of course!).
- Field trips = confidence!
- Visit dog-friendly stores, busy parks, or even just different neighborhoods. Let your Dane watch the world go by (and snag some treats for calm behavior).
- Reward, reward, reward.
- Great Danes live for your praise and snacks. Toss a treat every time your dog stays calm or greets someone gently.
- Skip the yelling.
- Positive reinforcement works. Yelling just confuses your gentle giant—trust me, I’ve been there.

Real Talk: Mailmen, Delivery Folks, and Tiny Dogs
I’ll be honest—sometimes I still get overexcited when the mailman shows up. But my family’s taught me the difference between a real threat and a friendly visitor. With a little patience and lots of practice, your Dane can too. The trick? Expose them to lots of people doing ordinary things, always with supervision and rewards.
