How to train a Great Dane (without losing your mind or your couch)

Hey fellow Dane-lovers! Yeti here—your resident, couch-hogging, snack-motivated gentle giant. Let’s talk about the one thing that decides whether your living room stays in one piece: training your Great Dane.

The mindset shift: patience > power

Here’s my truth: I wasn’t born knowing how not to drag you down the block like a runaway sled dog. Those long legs? They’ve got a mind of their own. But with time, patience, and the right treats, I learned to slow it down and match your tiny human pace (even if my paws are the size of dinner plates).

Mindset shift: Stop expecting instant obedience. Instead, focus on celebrating tiny wins. When I sit instead of jumping, or walk quietly on leash, praise me like I just won Best in Show. We giant puppies live for your approval, not your frustration.

Actionable tip: positive reinforcement = magic

Skip the yelling—go straight for snacks and praise. Seriously, positive reinforcement is your secret weapon. Every time I nail a command (or just avoid knocking over Grandma), toss a treat and let me know I’m a superstar. We Danes want to please our people—make it easy for us to understand what makes you happy!

  • Start leash training early, before I can out-muscle you.
  • Take me to new places, meet new people, meet new dogs. Early socialization = chill, confident Dane.
  • Keep training sessions short and sweet—my attention span is about as long as my tail.

Want proof? Here’s a peek behind the scenes: When my humans first started using treats and happy voices, I was sitting, staying, and walking like a pro in no time. No more chaos, no destroyed couches… just lots of cuddles (and snacks).

Bottom line: Training a Great Dane is about patience, positive vibes, and a lot of snacks—not brute force. Stick with it. Before you know it, you’ll have a giant, goofball shadow who listens and leaves your furniture standing.

See you (and your couch) next time! 🐾
